Is Wool Vegan? Is it Humane?

Is wool vegan?  And what’s the big deal about it anyways?  Isn’t it just like shaving your legs or trimming your beard?  Well, get ready to have the wool pulled off from over your eyes!
The vegan status of wool is a common question and I think it’s an important topic to address. Recently I was asked by viewer ‘Vegan Jen’ “why don’t some vegans wear wool? my parents used to have sheep, so my mom could spin the wool, and the sheep seemed as if they really enjoyed the haircut.  I’ve always wondered but don’t know any vegans personally to ask.”
The main reason people wonder if wool is vegan is that sheep don’t die from being sheared.  I’d like to address that concern first: Veganism, in general, is about opposing the use of animals for our personal gains in any form.  So even if we assume that nothing negative happens to sheep who are used for wool, we are still using them for our own purposes.  And that is the case regardless of how well the sheep are treated.

Animal Minds

Minds of Their Own

Animals are smarter than you think.

By Virginia Morell

In 1977 Irene Pepperberg, a recent graduate of Harvard University, did something very bold. At a time when animals still were considered automatons, she set out to find what was on another creature’s mind by talking to it. She brought a one-year-old African gray parrot she named Alex into her lab to teach him to reproduce the sounds of the English language. “I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask him questions about how he sees the world.”

This Guy Sold EVERYTHING He Had And Moved to Zimbabwe To Protect Endangered Animals

damien mander training
We all love animals and will drop anything within a heartbeat to help an animal in need, but are you willing to go beyond and say NO to the many things in life that bring you comfort (eg. a home, your job, money in the bank) so you can say YES to being generous and support the animals? Are you willing to sell all your worldly possession and give it away to ensure animals can survive? This guy did.

After his tour in Iraq and subsequent tours as a ‘mercenary’, he went on a patrol  tour in Africa and saw a dead elephant with his face hacked off. Female Genital Mutilation Banned In Nigeria!

History Has Been Made!

Female Genital Mutilation Banned In Nigeria!

In a move welcomed as a step in the right direction by international advocates, outgoing Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has signed a bill officially banning the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015, which was passed by the Nigerian Senate earlier in May, also will prevent men from leaving their families without proving financial support, according to Reuters.
Nigerian women’s rights and public health groups have long campaigned against FGM, which removes parts or all of a girl’s genitalia, often at a very young age and without the girl’s consultation or consent, saying that it violates human rights. The procedure has also led to severe health problems.

According to UNICEF:
“More than 130 million girls and women have experienced FGM/C in 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East where the practice is most common.”

With the help of community activism, campaigns and numbers of organizational efforts to end this practice, UNICEF reported that teenage girls were now one-third less likely to undergo FGM/C today than 30 years ago.
Now with the new law criminalizing this procedure, the hope is the ban will fully eliminate this practice and be strongly enforced to combat any existing societal pressures.
The World Health Organization cites immediate harmful effects of FCM/C that include hemorrhage (bleeding), bacterial infection, open sores, and long-term consequences that include infertility, childbirth complications and recurring bladder infections.

In another UNICEF report, communities who practice FGM often do so to reduce sexual desire in women and to initiate girls to womanhood, among other purposes.

According to “The Guardian‘s” analysis of 2014 UN data, a quarter of the women in Nigeria have undergone FGM.
Stella Mukasa, director of Gender, Violence and Rights at the International Center for Research on Women, explains the complexity of the implementation of the new law banning FGM/C.

“It is crucial that we scale up efforts to change traditional cultural views that underpin violence against women,” she wrote in an article for “The Guardian.” “Only then will this harmful practice be eliminated.”

The Sumatran Rhino is extinct in the wild

Time for sorrow
Another giant has left us: The Sumatran Rhino is extinct in the wild
In the Malaysian state of Sabah there are no Sumatran rhinos left in the wild, the Environment Minister says.
The eastern Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis harrissoni), also known as the Bornean rhino, is the worold’s smallest rhino, a subspecies of the Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), and is a shy and lone creature that inhabits Bornean forests.
Or better, it inhabited. In fact, according to the Environment Minister Masidi Manjun, there are no Sumatran rhinos left in the wild in the Malaysian state of Sabah. In 2008, about 50 rhinos lived in the wild, 5 years later there were only 10 individuals left, and today they are likely to be extinct.
The decline of this species is mainly linked to 2 factors: poaching for rhino’s horn (the horn actually doesn’t have any medical benefit, contrary to many people’s beliefs), and habitat loss due to deforestation, mainly carried out to make place to oil palm plantations, and to human settlements.

rinoceronti

There are currently only 3 surviving Sumatran rhinos in Sabah, two females and one male (Iman, Puntung and Tam), held in fenced, natural conditions at theBorneo Rhinoceros Sanctuary (BRS), but they seem to have reproduction problems.
“There is still hope to save the species from extinction. The only way now to achieve that is to use in vitro fertilization,” said John Payne, the Executive Director of the Borneo Rhino Alliance (BORA) and one of the world’s top experts on the species.
Sumatran rhinos come from the Pleistocene, when lots of individuals freely lived in the forests of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and China, until 1930, when men started hunting them for their horns, which were traded to Chinese people in exchange for porcelain objects.

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

Gradually, rhinos started hiding in thick forests, until men deforested such areas allowing poachers to reach them. Another animal species is on the brink of extinction, due to the endless human blood lust.
There’s still hope to save these mammals that appeared 20 million years ago, and to make them continue roaming wild in our planet’s forests.

Plants Communicate Using An Internet Of Fungus

Hidden beneath the surface and entangled in the roots of Earth’s astonishing and diverse plant life, there exists a biological superhighway linking together the members of the plant kingdom in what researchers call the “wood wide web”. This organic network operates much like our internet, allowing plants to communicate, bestow nutrition, or even harm one another.

The more we learn about this phenomenon, the more our understanding of the plant life of our planet will continue to change. Perhaps one day, we may be able to peacefully map out these complex fungal networks to appreciate them in their entirety.

The Great Forgetting!

The Great Forgetting: You Probably Haven't Heard about It But It Completely Affects Your Life

By Deep Ecology Hub / deep-ecology-hub.com
This article summarizes the ideas of Daniel Quinn, first written about in The Story of B, which was a sequel to Ishmael. The longer, original essay can be read here, and comes highly recommended, especially if you find yourself disagreeing with the summary below. Most disagreements we've read about have turned out to be misunderstandings, so please check the original before coming to conclusions.
The Great Forgetting refers to the wealth of knowledge that our culture lost when we adopted our new civilized lifestyle. The knowledge that allowed indigenous cultures to survive, the knowledge that we had once also been tribal and the understanding that we were but one mere culture of thousands. All of this disappeared in a few short generations.

Monsanto to Be Put on Trial

...for ‘Crimes Against Nature and Humanity’
 | December 7, 2015 10:16 am
The Organic Consumers Association, IFOAM International Organics, Navdanya, Regeneration International (RI) and Millions Against Monsanto, joined by dozens of global food, farming and environmental justice groups announced last week that they will put Monsanto, a U.S.-based transnational corporation, on trial for crimes against nature and humanity and ecocide, in The Hague, Netherlands, next year on World Food Day, Oct. 16, 2016.

The announcement was made at a press conference held in conjunction with the COP21 United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris.
“The time is long overdue for a global citizens’ tribunal to put Monsanto on trial for crimes against humanity and the environment,” Ronnie Cummins, international director of the Organic Consumers Association and Via Organica, said. “We are in Paris this month to address the most serious threat that humans have ever faced in our 100-200,000 year evolution—global warming and climate disruption. Why is there so much carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere and not enough carbon organic matter in the soil? Corporate agribusiness, industrial forestry, the garbage and sewage industry and agricultural biotechnology have literally killed the climate-stabilizing, carbon-sink capacity of the Earth’s living soil.”
Vandana Shiva, physicist, author, activist and founder of Navdanya agrees. “Monsanto has pushed GMOs in order to collect royalties from poor farmers, trapping them in unpayable debt and pushing them to suicide,” she said. “Monsanto promotes an agro-industrial model that contributes at least 50 percent of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Monsanto is also largely responsible for the depletion of soil and water resources, species extinction and declining biodiversity and the displacement of millions of small farmers worldwide.”
Since the beginning of the twentieth century, Monsanto has developed a steady stream of highly toxic products which have permanently damaged the environment and caused illness or death for thousands of people. These products include:
• PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl), one of the 12 Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) that affect human and animal fertility;
• 2,4,5 T (2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a dioxin-containing component of the defoliant, Agent Orange, which was used by the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and continues to cause birth defects and cancer;
• Lasso, an herbicide that is now banned in Europe; and
• Roundup, the most widely used herbicide in the world and the source of the greatest health and environmental scandal in modern history. This toxic herbicide, designated a probable human carcinogen by the World Health Organization, is used in combination with genetically modified RoundUp Ready seeds in large-scale monocultures, primarily to produce soybeans, maize and rapeseed for animal feed and biofuels.

Relying on the “Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights” adopted by the UN in 2011, an international court of lawyers and judges will assess the potential criminal liability of Monsanto for damages inflicted on human health and the environment. The court will also rely on the Rome Statute that created the International Criminal Court in The Hague in 2002 and it will consider whether to reform international criminal law to include crimes against the environment, or ecocide, as a prosecutable criminal offense. The International Criminal Court, established in 2002 in The Hague, has determined that prosecuting ecocide as a criminal offense is the only way to guarantee the rights of humans to a healthy environment and the right of nature to be protected.
